What You Need to Know at Petit Lapin?

Since its opening, Petit Lapin has served many people with food allergies or intolerances. We are pleased to see that these people, especially children, were able to enjoy delicious treats without worries since it’s the main reason of Petit Lapin’s existence.

Yesterday, January 19, 2015, after precisely 10 months and 1 day of existence, we had a case of food reaction reported by a customer. She sent us an email letting us know of her bad experience at Petit Lapin. We are very grateful that she took the time to write these valuable comments. They are the reason for this post which we consider very important. We invite you to read it carefully.

At Petit Lapin, we guarantee that all our products do not contain the 10 priority allergens, which are: dairies, eggs, nuts, peanuts, soy, sesame, wheat and gluten, fish, seafood, mustard and sulfites. It’s a promise we take very seriously and follow rigorously! However, be vigilant since our cupcakes, donuts, cake pops, cakes, and much more, contain chickpea flour! Chickpeas are part of the legume family! We especially want the attention of people who have allergies to soy or peanuts because you may react to chickpeas. Many know that soy is a legume, but few know that peanut is also a legume and not a nut.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that our products do not contain legumes. Certainly, we do not use soy or peanuts in the making of our sweets, but we cannot avoid cross-linking allergies caused by chickpea flour.

The client mentioned above has a 17-year-old daughter who is severely allergic to eggs and peanuts. They came to Petit Lapin on Sunday, January 18, 2015, to buy cupcakes and a donut. Once at home, her daughter ate the donut and a mini red velvet cupcake. A reaction ensued a few minutes later. No hives or anaphylaxic shock have been reported, but her throat felt irritated. Benadryl was given and she went to the emergency.

I had the chance to talk on the phone with my client after reading with great concern her email. She told me that her daughter never tried chickpeas before and it was the first time that a reaction has occurred by eating sweets from Petit Lapin. For sure, her daughter will be tested for chickpeas at her next visit with her allergist. I am convinced that chickpeas are the cause of her allergic reaction, hence the importance of telling this story.

At Petit Lapin, we are very concerned that you can enjoy our sweets without worries. It is therefore very important to advise you not to eat our products if you are not certain of not having allergies to legumes. Most of our customers who are allergic to peanuts have no problem with the consumption of our products. We also have customers allergic to soy who have no problem with chickpeas. So just be careful. Do not risk if you are not sure! Be aware that our macaroons, cream puffs and madeleines do not contain any chickpea flour. In addition, it is possible to make a special request for cupcakes, donuts, cake pops, etc. so that they do not contain any chickpea flour as well. Chickpea flour is replaced by rice flour.

We hope that this note puts much emphasis on the fact that at Petit Lapin, we use chickpea flour. Therefore, be careful if you are allergic to peanuts and/or soy because we certainly do not want a situation similar to that of our client to occurr.

Thank you for your attention!

Viviane
